O. Henry

William Sydney Porter, conocido como O. Henry, (11 de septiembre de 1862, Greensboro, Carolina del Norte, Estados Unidos-5 de junio de 1910, Nueva York, Estados Unidos), fue un escritor estadounidense. Es considerado uno de los maestros del cuento. Su admirable tratamiento de los finales narrativos sorpresivos popularizó en lengua inglesa la expresión «un final a lo O. Henry» (an O. Henry ending).^[1]​

Biografía

Nació en Greensboro, Carolina del Norte. Su padre, Algernon Sidney Porter, era médico. Cuando Henry tenía tres años, su madre murió de tuberculosis y él y su padre se trasladaron a la casa de la abuela paterna. Henry era un gran lector y alumno estudioso que se graduó en la escuela elemental en 1876. Más tarde se matriculó en el Instituto Calle Linsey. En 1879 empezó a trabajar como contable en la farmacia de un tío suyo y en 1881, a los 19 años, obtuvo el título de farmacéutico.

La juventud del escritor fue tormentosa. Se trasladó al condado de LaSalle, Texas en 1882, trabajando en un rancho de ovejas. Posteriormente, en 1884, se trasladó a la ciudad de Austin, donde residió en casa de un amigo durante tres años. Uno de los habitantes de esa vivienda era un gato llamado Henry, y de la expresión «¡Oh, Henry!» surgió el seudónimo que inmortalizó al narrador. Es en esta época cuando comienzan sus problemas con el abuso en el consumo de alcohol; también es cuando aprende a dominar el idioma español. En 1887, se fugó con la joven Athol Estes, hija de una familia adinerada. En 1888, Athol dio a luz a un niño que murió. En 1889 nació una nueva hija: Margaret.

En 1894, Porter fundó un semanario humorístico llamado The Rolling Stone. En ese mismo año sería despedido de un banco de Austin por malversador. Al venirse abajo The Rolling Stone, el escritor se mudó a Houston, donde fue periodista en el Houston Post.

En Austin, O. Henry desempeñó diversos oficios, entre ellos trazador de planos en la General Land Office y desde 1891, como cajero del First National Bank, en donde se produciría el suceso más trascendental de toda su vida: O. Henry fue acusado en 1895 de apropiarse de un caudal de dinero que tenía bajo su responsabilidad. Si bien muchos autores ponen en tela de juicio la culpabilidad del escritor, lo cierto es que tras advertir que sería arrestado por desfalco, en la víspera del juicio O. Henry decidió abandonar su país en julio de 1896 y se embarcó vía Nueva Orleans con destino a Honduras.

Pasó cerca de siete meses viviendo en Honduras, principalmente en Trujillo. Más tarde escribió cuentos que tenían lugar en el pueblo de Coralio (basado en el pueblo real de Trujillo) en un ficticio país de América Central llamado Anchuria (basado en el país real de Honduras). La mayor parte de esos cuentos aparecen en el libro Cabbages and Kings.

Poco o nada se conoce de su vida en Centroamérica, hasta que en febrero de 1897 se entera de que su mujer estaba agonizando en la ciudad de Austin, por lo que O. Henry debió tomar la decisión de volver a EE. UU. para estar junto a su esposa poco antes de su muerte, acaecida el 25 de julio de 1897. Menos de un año después, el escritor es capturado por la justicia por el desfalco del First National Bank y condenado a una pena de cinco años de prisión en la penitenciaria nacional de Columbus (Ohio), en la que ingresó en 1898 y donde estuvo detenido por tres años, hasta que se le concedió la libertad por buena conducta.

O. Henry comenzó a escribir relatos cortos durante su estancia en la cárcel para poder ganar el dinero para mantener a su hija. En 1899, uno de sus relatos, «Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking», llegó a ser publicado por una conocida revista de la época: el McClure's Magazine.

Cuando cumplió su pena, en 1901, cambió definitivamente su nombre, William Sydney Porter, por el de O. Henry, acaso con la intención de borrar las sombras de su pasado. Se trasladó ese mismo año a Nueva York en donde vivió hasta su muerte.

En Nueva York, la ciudad que el escritor amaba y escenario de muchas de sus narraciones, O. Henry obtuvo el reconocimiento por parte del público, aunque su relativa fama y su éxito literario nunca le brindaron un bienestar económico, en gran medida debido a su afición a la bebida. En efecto, existe una anécdota que dice que su relato más famoso, «El regalo de los Reyes Magos» (considerado por los críticos como uno de los mejores), fue escrito bajo la presión de un plazo de entrega, en tan solo tres horas y acompañado de una botella entera de whisky.

Desde diciembre de 1903 hasta enero de 1906 escribió un cuento a la semana para el New York World.

Contrajo nuevas nupcias en 1907 con su novia de la infancia, Sarah Lindsey Coleman. Ni este matrimonio ni el éxito que obtuvo rápidamente con sus cuentos (o tal vez precisamente por esto último) impidieron que cayese en el alcoholismo. Sarah lo abandonó en 1909.

O. Henry murió un 5 de junio de 1910 a causa de una cirrosis hepática. Se celebró su funeral en Nueva York y fue sepultado en Asheville, Carolina del Norte. Su hija, Margaret Worth Porter, murió en 1927 y fue inhumada junto a su padre.

Obra

En la mayoría de los mejores relatos de O. Henry, escritos en los primeros años del siglo XX, se valora principalmente el final imprevisto y los giros repentinos de la trama al final de la historia. Muchos cuentos tienen lugar en la ciudad de Nueva York y retratan generalmente personajes normales y corrientes como dependientes, policías, camareras. Su obra más conocida, Los cuatro millones, hace referencia al número de habitantes de la ciudad de Nueva York a comienzos del siglo XX, y al hecho de que cada uno de estos habitantes constituía para O. Henry «una historia digna de ser contada».

El trabajo de O. Henry es en lo fundamental un producto típico del tiempo en que vivió. El escritor supo captar a la perfección el sabor de su época y de su circunstancia. Ya fuese deambulando por los pastos de Texas, indagando en el arte de los timadores o investigando las tensiones de clase en la gran ciudad, el toque del escritor para aislar cada elemento de la sociedad, describiéndolo con suma parquedad y gracia lingüística, era inimitable.

Son muy conocidas sus antologías Heart of the West (Corazón del Oeste), The Four Million (‘Los cuatro millones’) y Cabbages and Kings (‘Repollos y reyes’) en las que exhibe algunos de sus mejores relatos. La tercera, menos conocida, comprende una serie de cuentos, cada uno de los cuales explora cuidadosamente, sobre la base de una compleja estructura, un aspecto concreto de la vida en Anchuria un anquilosado país de Centroamérica.

Otros grandes relatos de O. Henry, traducidos al castellano son: Best seller, Memorias de un perro amarillo, Un amante tacaño, Regalo de Reyes, Déjeme tomarle el pulso, Vocación mesiánica, El oro que relucía. También existe una colección antológica de O’ Henry traducida al español, Obras selectas, en dos tomos.

En uno de sus relatos situados en el Salvaje Oeste creó el personaje Cisco Kid que con el tiempo se convirtió en una popular figura en películas, series televisivas y cómics.

En los cuentos de O. Henry se han querido ver prefigurados algunos de los grandes personajes de la escena literaria estadounidense como J. D. Salinger, Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe, Raymond Carver, etc.

Jorge Luis Borges, que lo admiraba profundamente, escribió sobre él: “Edgar Allan Poe había sostenido que todo cuento debe redactarse en función de su desenlace; O. Henry exageró esta doctrina y llegó así al trick story, al relato en cuya línea final acecha una sorpresa. Tal procedimiento, a la larga, tiene algo de mecánico; O. Henry nos ha dejado, sin embargo, más de una breve y patética obra maestra”.

En Estados Unidos se creó en su memoria el Premio O. Henry (O. Henry Award) de cuentos, uno de los más importantes del mundo. Entre otros escritores, lo han recibido William Faulkner, Dorothy Parker, Flannery O'Connor, John Updike, Truman Capote, Raymond Carver, Saul Bellow y Woody Allen.
