Soneto 1
From fairest creatures we desire increase, That thereby beauty's rose might never die, But as the riper should by time decease, His tender heir might bear his memory: But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes, Feed'st thy light'st flame with self-substantial fuel, Making a famine where abundance lies, Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel. Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament And only herald to the gaudy spring, Within thine own bud buriest thy content And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding. Pity the world, or else this glutton be, To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

El Soneto 1 es el primero de los 154 sonetos escritos por William Shakespeare.

Traducción

Queremos que propaguen, las más bellas criaturas,

su especie, porque nunca, pueda morir la rosa

y cuando el ser maduro, decaiga por el tiempo

perpetúe su memoria, su joven heredero.

Pero tú, dedicado a tus brillantes ojos,

alimentas la llama, de tu luz con tu esencia,

creando carestía, donde existe abundancia.

Tú, tu propio enemigo, eres cruel con tu alma.

Tú, que eres el fragante, adorno de este mundo,

la única bandera, que anuncia primaveras,

en tu propio capullo, sepultas tu alegría

y haces, dulce tacaño, derroche en la avaricia.

Apiádate del mundo, o entre la tumba y tú,

devoraréis el bien que a este mundo se debe.^[1]​
