Lipán

Los lipanes son un grupo apache que hablaba el idioma lipán, lengua perteneciente a la familia de lenguas atabascanas del sur y habitaron en Texas, Estados Unidos, y la parte Norte de México como Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León y Tamaulipas, en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII. La mayor parte de los lipanes actuales viven con los mescaleros en la Reserva Mescalero en Nuevo México. algunas reservas en México El resto vive en Texas. cabe mencionar que muchos de estos grupos apaches viven bajo en anonimato en la parte Norte de México y otros se mezclaron con la población

Sinonimia

Los lipanes también son conocidos como Cazadores de búfalo Nde, Apache Este, Apache de los Llanos, Lipan, Ipande, Ypandes, Ipandes, Ipandi, Lipanes, Lipanos, Lipanis, Lipaines, Lapane, Lapanne, Lapanas, Lipau, Lipaw, Apaches Lipan, Apacheria Lipana, y Lipanes Llaneros. El primer nombre registrado fue Ypandis, en 1732.

Subdivisiones

Los apaches cuelgahen nde lipan de Texas incluyen a los descendientes del pueblo Tall Grass conocido como lipán apache —apaches seguidores de los jefes Cuelga de Castro, John Castro, y Ramón Castro.

Historia

Los lipanes son mencionados por primera vez en los registros españoles de 1718 cuando atacaron San Antonio (Texas). Parece probable que los lipanes se establecieron en Texas durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVII. En el siglo XVIII se trasladaron hacia el sur, a una zona en la que los españoles construyeron las misiones de Coahuila en 1754 y la del río San Sabá en 1757. Ambas misiones fueron quemadas y abandonadas. En esa época su territorio abarcaba desde el río Colorado hasta el río Grande. Dos grupos locales lipán tenían un total de 700 personas en 1762. Dado que había al menos otros 12 grupos locales, Morris Opler estima que la población era de aproximadamente de 3000 a 4000 personas. Estima que en 1700 había un total de 6000 individuos.

Lengua

El lipán es también una lengua atabascana del sur hablada por Meredith Begay, Ted Rodriguez y otros en la Reserva Apache Mescalero. El consenso general del Comité Apache Lipán de esa reserva es que las consideraciones lingüísticas y antropológicas sobre su desaparición cultural son erróneas.
