John Kirk

John Kirk (19 de diciembre de 1832 - 15 de enero de 1922) fue un científico, médico, naturalista, botánico, compañero del explorador David Livingstone y cónsul británico en Zanzíbar. Nació en Barry, cerca de Arbroath (Escocia) y fue enterrado en la iglesia de St. Nicholas en Sevenoaks, Kent, Inglaterra. Obtuvo su título de médico por la Universidad de Edimburgo. Durante toda su vida se mostró interesado por la botánica y su trabajo fue muy elogiado por los sucesivos directores de los Jardines Botánicos Reales de Kew: Sir William Hooker, Joseph Dalton Hooker y William Thistleton-Dyer.

A la muerte de su amigo y compañero David Livingstone, John Kirk se dedicó a continuar su proyecto de acabar con el comercio de esclavos en África Oriental. Durante años negoció con el sultán Barghash ibn Said de Zanzíbar, ganándose su confianza y prometiéndole la ayuda británica para enriquecer su reino en África Oriental mediante el comercio legítimo. El sultán emitió dos decretos limitando el comercio de esclavos en 1873 y 1886, aunque no erradicó por completo la esclavitud. Por desgracia, tras la Conferencia de Berlín el gobierno británico nombró a John Kirk cónsul en Zanzíbar para que presionara al sultán. John se mostró muy incómodo en su nueva posición, defendiendo los intereses británicos en el "Reparto de África". (referencia: Ferguson, N. Empire : How Britain Made the Modern World. p.236)

    John Kirk tuvo una hija, Helen, que se casó con el Mayor-General Henry Brooke Hagstromer Wright CB, CMG, el hermano del famoso bacteriólogo e inmunólogo Sir Almroth Edward Wright y de Sir Charles Theodore Hagberg Wright, Secretario y Bibliotecario de la London Libray. El ingeniero Alexander C. Kirk fue el hermano mayor de John Kirk.

    Honores editar

    Fue nombrado miembro de la Royal Society el 9 de junio de 1887 y miembro honorífico de la Sociedad Zoológica de Londres en 1888.
