La banda es más conocida por su versión de Patti Smith, "Because the Night", incluido en su MTV Unplugged de 1993. Esta versión, con algunos cambios en su letra, alcanzó el número 11 en el Billboard Hot 100, sin que pudieran superarlo con otra canción.

Historia

Originalmente 10,000 Maniacs estuvo integrado por Natalie Merchant (voz) John Lombardo (guitarra) Robert Buck (guitarra), Steven Gustafson (bajo), Dennis Drew (teclados) y Jerry Augustyniak (batería). El grupo hizo numerosas giras especialmente en el circuito universitario y fue haciéndose de fama y seguidores hasta que firmó un contrato con la discográfica Elektra y grabó su primer disco The Wishing Chair en 1985. Fue con su segundo larga duración (ya sin Lombardo que dejó el grupo en 1986) In My Tribe (1987) que lograron hacerse conocidos del público en general. Su siguiente grabación Blind Man's Zoo (1989) fue disco de oro.

Natalie Merchant, abandonó el grupo en 1992 dejando como legado la notable aparición de despedida del grupo en la serie Unplugged de MTV. Los 10,000 Maniacs incorporaron al dúo John & Mary (Lombardo y la violinista y cantante Mary Ramsey). Así continuaron presentándose y grabando aunque sufrieron el golpe de la muerte de Robert Buck en 2000.
