Paul Tillich

Paul Johannes Tillich (Starzeddel, 20 de agosto de 1886-Chicago, 22 de octubre de 1965) fue un filósofo existencialista cristiano y teólogo protestante luterano germanoestadounidense que es ampliamente considerado como uno de los teólogos más influyentes del siglo xx.^[1]​ También escribió varias obras históricas con temas cristianos.

Entre el público general es mejor conocido por sus obras The Courage to Be (1952, El coraje de ser) y Dynamics of Faith (1957, Dinámica de la fe), que introdujeron temas de teología y cultura moderna entre los lectores.

En teología académica es relevante por su importante trabajo en tres volúmenes Systematic Theology (1951-63, Teología sistemática) en el que desarrolló su método de correlación: un enfoque que explora los símbolos de la revelación cristiana como respuestas a los problemas de la existencia humana, planteados por el análisis filosófico existencialista contemporáneo.^[2]​^[3]​

Biografía

Nació en 1886 en Starzeddel, Brandeburgo. En 1900 se trasladó con su familia a Berlín donde su padre, pastor protestante, había aceptado un puesto en el Consistorio Real. Entre 1904 y 1909 cursó estudios de Teología en las universidades de Berlín, Tubinga y Halle. En dicha época de estudiante fue influenciado por la filosofía tardía de Friedrich Schelling.

Entre 1908 y 1918 desarrolló su labor como pastor en el entorno de Berlín y, durante la guerra, como pastor castrense en el frente occidental.

Entre 1919 y 1924 enseñó en la Facultad de Teología de Berlín y encabezó un grupo de trabajo de orientación socialista que discutió la situación religiosa del presente. De 1924 a 1925, se desempeñó como profesor de Teología en la Universidad de Marburgo, donde comenzó a desarrollar su teología sistemática. Entre 1925 hasta 1929, fue profesor de Teología en la Universidad de Dresde y en la Universidad de Leipzig. Ocupó el mismo cargo en la Universidad Johann Wolfgang Goethe de Fráncfort del Meno, de 1929 a 1933.^[4]​

Sus conferencias públicas lo pusieron en conflicto con el nazismo. Cuando Adolf Hitler se convirtió en canciller alemán en enero de 1933, Tillich fue destituido de su cargo en Fráncfort. Cuando el teólogo estadounidense Reinhold Niebuhr visitó Alemania en el verano de 1933, ya impresionado con los escritos de Tillich, lo contactó al enterarse de su despido y le instó a unirse a la facultad en el Seminario Teológico Unido en Nueva York (Union Theological Seminary in New York); Tillich aceptó.^[4]​

Abandonó Alemania y en noviembre de 1933 llegó a Nueva York junto a su familia. Con Niebuhr y otros con puntos de vista similares fundaron la Fellowship of Socialist Christians.^[5]​ Participó activamente en varias organizaciones de exiliados, como el Consejo para una Alemania Democrática (Council for a Democratic Germany), que fundó en 1944. Desde 1933 hasta 1955 enseñó en el Seminario Teológico Unido y se dedicó a una intensa labor publicística e intelectual; su pensamiento filosófico y teológico irá abandonado el socialismo religioso de etapas anteriores para decantarse hacia la antropología y la filosofía de la existencia.

Entre 1955 y 1962 impartió clases y conferencias como profesor universitario en Harvard, y finalmente, hasta su muerte en 1965, como profesor de teología en la Divinity School de la Universidad de Chicago.^[6]​^[7]​^[8]​
