En el campo protocolo de la cabecera de un datagrama IP se codifica el valor del protocolo de nivel superior que viajará en su campo de datos. Según el IANA, organismo encargado de la asignación de números a los protocolos, podemos destacar los siguientes valores para estos protocolos de nivel superior..
