Carleton Beals

Carleton Beals (Medicine Lodge, Kansas,[1]​ 13 de noviembre de 1893 - Middletown, Connecticut, 26 de junio de 1979)[2]​ fue un periodista y escritor estadounidense.[1]​[2]​[3]​[4]​[5]​

Después de realizar estudios relacionados con la ingeniería, viajó por multitud de países, como México, España, Italia, Nicaragua, Grecia, Alemania, la Unión Soviética y Cuba, escribiendo sobre ellos.[6]​ Debido a su negativa a combatir en la Primera Guerra Mundial, fue encarcelado en tres ocasiones y se exilió en México en julio de 1918 junto con su hermano menor Ralph.[7]​ Fue asimismo crítico con la actitud de los Estados Unidos en Latinoamérica,[3]​ escribiendo desde una perspectiva «anti-imperialista».[5]​[8]​ Tuvo problemas para publicar parte de sus investigaciones[3]​ y fue vigilado por el FBI.[5]​ Habría mantenido una relación de amistad con Manuel Azaña.[9]​

Entre sus más de cuarenta libros[5]​ se encuentran obras como Mexico; an interpretation,[10]​ Destroying Victor (1929),[11]​ Mexican Maze (1931), con ilustraciones de Diego Rivera,[12]​ Porfirio Diaz, Dictator of Mexico (1932),[13]​ The Crime of Cuba (1933),[14]​[8]​ Fire on the Andes (1934),[15]​[16]​ Banana Gold,[17]​[18]​ America South,[19]​ Pan America,[20]​[21]​[22]​ Rio Grande to Cape Horn,[23]​ House in Mexico (1958)[24]​ o Latin America: World in Revolution.[25]​ John A. Britton publicó en 1987 una biografía de Beals, titulada Carleton Beals: A Radical Journalist in Latin America.[26]​
